Today I am exploring which 'community of practice I might join. I am aware that I want to consider two things: 1. How do I see my future? ie. where do I want to put my effort? e.g an over seas school or as a senior leader or as a Principal? What is it that I want to achieve (and give) before I get too old? 2. One of my main goals is to converse around pedagogy much more easily-which community of learners might help facilitate this?
I spent some of the time today exploring the International Baccalaureate programme, incase it is an option for teaching in NZ or overseas. I guess one things that I am thinking is that an overseas teaching experience would add to my toolkit when I returned.
I also explored Core Education to look at what PD they offer and Michael Fullan's 'New Pedagogies for Deep Learning' really resonated with me: "We work alongside educators to change the role of teachers to that of activators of learning who design learning experiences that build on learner strengths and needs, create new knowledge using real-life problem solving and help all students identify their talents, purpose and passion". So I will reconsider that one once I have searched VLN.
I thought I'd finish looking at the Aspiring Principals information (on TKI) in order to make sure I have left no stone unturned in terms of what I potentially may like to do next. I looked briefly at a study from the UK where someone's research project was around interviewing new Principals of small schools, only to have my knowing confirmed, that small school Principal's and staff do all the work of a big school- there are just less people to do it. I also found out that the Aspiring Principals programme doesn't exist anymore and that the Ministry have set up other opportunities for support both under the CoL umbrella and some modules for first time principals. I was particularly interested in the paper by Dr Graeme Aitken of the University of Auckland, The Inquiring Teacher: Clarifying the concept of teaching effectiveness' and will read that.
