Readings from last 590 conference- 16th May 2017
Tips from Jo Robinson re writing a lit review.
you are allowed to make a statement and back it up in a lit review.
I can use a main source person who is great eg. Michael Fullan, but I have to use other researchers credible work to confirm he is by what they say. I can use his ideas, but don't do too many direct quotes. I can change words in his quotes, so that I am putting what he is saying into my own words, and then I should back this up with ...and _ agrees & _ syntheses & _ backs this up.

Essentially I can rewrite what M Fullan ......says in my own words synthesise..., by saying ' the literature says this',and backing it up with other peoples views as well. add who ever agress/aligns with this. give credibity what gives him the right to say it / is this work robust.
im saying what he said.... as stated by fullan 2008 synthesise what he has said into my own words.
find all the people who have written about ICt and about deep learning....what is the discourse that has come out...what are they arguing about ? are they all agreeing, but find the points of contention.
Boote, D. N., & Beile, P. (2005). Scholars before researchers: On the centrality of the dissertation literature review in research preparation. Educational Researcher, 34(6), 3-15. Access via library
Main points: Clear guidelines for quality research (including 12 point rubric). Beautifully expressed and articulated.
1. Literature is the absolute foundation of the research. P.3 " preparing students to analyze and synthesize the research in a field of specialisation is crucial to understanding educational ideas.
2. Good research builds on research that which has gone before & grants our work integrity and sophistication. The researcher must understand the previous literature and learn from it.
3. Objectives of a Literature Review:
p 4. Sets the broad context of the study- Clearly demarcates what it is and what it isnt in the context of the study - & Justifies those decisions.
Evans, J., & Benefield, P. (2001). Systematic reviews of educational research: Does the medical model fit? British Educational Research Journal, 27(5), 527-541. Access via library
Main points: Systematic Review will be the one I use (even if it is qualitative based).
1. "what" is a better research question than "how does it feel"?
2. The research needs to be cumulative in nature-build on a body of knowledge in order to inform practitioners.
3. This paper is great
Hammersley, M. (2001). On ‘systematic’ reviews of research literature: A ‘narrative’ response to Evans & Benefield. British Educational Research Journal, 27(5), 543-554. Access via library
Main points: Pretty much anti-systematic review because it "extends the myth of audit society to research" (eg national standards)-conclusion page. 551.
Slavin, R. E. (1986). Best-evidence synthesis: An alternative to meta-analytic and traditional reviews. Educational Researcher, 15(9), 5-11. Access via library
Main points:
I like this because it supports systematic qualitative research.
Another very good tool for me to use when doing literature reviews because it specifies the components in detail and gives examples.
Criteria for choosing studies for Lit review-germaneness (relevance), methodological accurateness (is there any bias/reliability of the measures), validity-( should not include extremely brief or artificial studies).

  • 590 Research Question- Want to look into leadership as well...

What is the effect of Solo Taxonomy on student agency and teacher confidence & competence & deep learning in the Modern Learning Environment?
-What is the evidence of less 'external regulation' to greater 'self regulation' for learners?
- How are assessment & learning progressions unpacked, understood and utilised?
Michael Fullan's A Rich Seam has excellent links to Solo and impact on teacher confidence. p 22 and h24 (highlighted).
435 Literature Review Question-Designing internet based learning experiences which facilitate deep learning.  OR- Which internet based learning experiences facilitate deep learning? Or (page 533 Evans) To describe and explain current knowledge about effective classroom practice related to IBL learning experiences in order to guide professional practice.
This book would be good- Gilly Salmon 'e-moderating'
May 13th 2017: Hi Debbie-these look like interesting ideas to me (and not just because you complimented my learning design!) :-) I think the  last ones are better, because they are much more focused - they talk more about what you want to do. I would probably go for the third one (Designing internet based learning experiences which facilitate deep learning.), because it is the most specific - it focuses on the desired outcome - deep learning - and on what you are interested in - IBL experiences that facilitate this. This means in your essay you'll need to explain/define what deep learning is (and why it is desirable) and then explore how IBL/what IBL activities can facilitate this. You'll be able to do this in two different ways - through using empirical research that shows that IBL activities facilitate deep learning, and through using theoretical literature that shows that the theoretical design of IBL activities is in line with what effect deep learning activities look like.

Choosing which literature review
What is the effect of Solo Taxonomy on student agency and teacher confidence & competence & deep learning in the Modern Learning Environment?
Which literature review do you think is most appropriate for what you want to do? What do think the advantages and disadvantages are, and why do you think your chosen kind is the most appropriate for you?
Evans & Benefield. P 530. I think that 'systematic review' based on the fact that it is so regulated. I would want it to produce clear outcomes for the audience. The 'problem solving' model or the 'interactive model'would be the particular slants mine would fuel.
Evans & Benefield page. 539, " this means that studies using qualitative methods can be included in a systematic review to help illuminate why particular interventions are effective."

Types of literature reviews
The readings identified a number of types of literature reviews. In this discussion, we will talk about the differences between them. Start by noting whether or not you've conducted a literature review before, and if so, which kind of literature review it was.

  1. A delightful little reading on types of feedback but woven through Emily Dickinson's poetry. Would like to look further at the website.
